How the test works

  1. Read the paragraph in the box, then click the typing area and start typing. The timer starts on your first keystroke — never before.
  2. Watch the live stats: WPM (words per minute), accuracy, error count and elapsed time. Correct characters turn green, mistakes get marked red, and the current character is underlined.
  3. Finish the paragraph to lock in your result. Hit Restart to retry the same text or New text for a fresh paragraph.

What your numbers mean

WPM is calculated the standard way: correctly typed characters divided by 5, per minute. The ÷5 convention means the number is comparable across any text. Accuracy is correct keystrokes as a share of everything you typed, including backspaces over mistakes. The average person types around 40 WPM; comfortable office work sits at 60–80; professional typists exceed 90. Chasing speed while accuracy craters is the classic trap — a 60 WPM at 98% accuracy out-produces 90 WPM at 85% in every real job.

How to actually get faster

Why a local test?

Typing tests watch you type by definition. Ours just never shares what it sees: the text, your keystrokes and your stats stay inside the browser tab and disappear when you close it. No account, no leaderboard harvesting your behavior, no cookies to clear. Practice in peace.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

WPM (words per minute) = correctly typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes elapsed. Dividing by 5 is the standard "word" convention, so it works for any text regardless of actual word lengths.

What is a good typing speed?

Average is around 40 WPM. Comfortable professional typing is 60–80 WPM. Above 90 WPM with high accuracy is genuinely fast. Accuracy matters more than raw speed in real work — 60 WPM at 98% beats 90 WPM at 85%.

Is my typing tracked or stored?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and your stats vanish when you close the tab.

When does the timer start?

On your first keystroke — never before. Take your time reading the text first; only actual typing time counts.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, though phone keyboards give lower WPM than physical ones — it's still a fun way to practice touch typing on any device.
